Bass player Dominic Lash (of whom the Newcastle Journal has written of his "endless efforts to veer left of every known note or chord") has become a stalwart of the improvising scenes both in London and his native Oxford. In March 2011 he will, however, be leaving these shores for New York and so has arranged this event to bring together some of his very favourite musicians – among the finest improvisers in the country – and raise some money for a vital cause.

The evening will feature four ensembles: two small groups and two large bands.

First:

A small group (lineup to be confirmed) will play music by the Wandelweiser composers' collective.

Second:

An improvising ensemble featuring:

Benedict Drew (electronics)
Phil Durrant (electronics)
Patrick Farmer (drums & objects)
Sarah Hughes (autoharp)
Dominic Lash (double bass)
Jonathan McHugh (analogue synth)
Eddie Prévost (percussion)
Samantha Rebello (flute)
Mark Wastell (cello)
Plus more musicians to be confirmed.

Third:

Alex Ward's quartet Predicate (featuring Lash, Tim Hill on saxophones & Mark Sanders on drums). Ward himself plays electric guitar, and provides the intricate compositions: "think 'ecstatic jazz' but without the ecstasy, though some agony may well be involved". The group have recently recorded their debut album, and this performance will feature the first performance of newly written material.

And finally, a mammoth big band to round off the evening with a bang. The provisional line-up is as follows:

Javier Carmona
Will Connor
Steve Noble
Paul May
Mark Sanders
Phil Marks
