Warren Haynes on Songwriting and Branching Out Musically

Warren Haynes talks about writing rootsy music

With his latest endeavor, Ashes & Dust, Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, The Allman Brothers) has done a few things that are rare for the veteran rock god: It's only his third release under his own name, it has an uncharacteristically rootsy acoustic sound, and Warren busts out his slide more than he has in years.

"Most of the writing I do comes when I'm lyrically inspired" - Warren Haynes

The music on Ashes & Dust is a timeline into the past and through the present, some of the songs dating back 20 or 30 years, and others written recently for the album. Haynes says some of the songs have been squirrelled away specifically because they were more singer-songwriter or acoustic focused, and haven't quite fit the sound of his other projects. But now with the phenomenal Railroad Earth at his side, he's had the perfect opportunity to showcase his rootsy chops, and a world in which the songs can thrive.
