Breakbot - Interview (Last.fm Sessions)

Last.fm dives deep into the career of the French DJ/Producer

Parisian born and bred, Thibaut Berland was always a bright and promising student of art and music. Then in 2005 during the boom of Myspace, he took on the name Breakbot to better expose his creative efforts, showcasing both his original compositions as well as a plethora of mixtapes, remixes and an ever growing library of living-breathing musical history. Gaining a solid fanbase led him to develop a live show and so with laptop under one arm and a stack of CD's under the other he hit the European club scene with a force unmeasured.

Most recently, Breakbot has been brought overseas thanks to the efforts of the good people at Sire/ADA and Ed Banger records (Justice,Metronomy) and now following his first North American tour, Thibault is reeling from the eurphoric success of not only overwhelmingly popular response to his uber-visual stage show on the Festival circuit, but also the mass appeal of his first full-length release: By Your Side. The combination of vintage/retro pop with contemporary technology and accompaniment of tremendously talented artists and vocalists such as Ruckazoid, Pacific! and Irfane (fromOutlines) creates something of a time-capsule in musicology... because ultimately 'Breakbot is a dude in a basement looking for melodies.'

The album-as-a-whole experience isn't out of place in the most massive discotheque, tiny wood-paneled basement, your own car or your mom's kitchen circa 1982. It has a smooth catchy sound that spans decades, while implementing a multi-instrumental appeal that doesn't adhere to one specific genre. Previously released internationally and digitally in December of last year, this past week brought a special new edition for the fans of physical releases which includes a bonus track and additional remix downloads; plus a digital deluxe version now available with previously unreleased tracks: "Shades of Black" and "Make You Mine."
