7 Songs You Need To Hear Right Now 2.17.17

7 fresh tracks to check out, including Animal Collective and Omarion

Animal Collective - Kinda Bonkers

It's amazing it took over a decade for Animal Collective to title a song "Kinda Bonkers," as the phrase aptly sums up their entire discography. The group have been making disorienting psych-folk for years but "Kinda Bonkers" distills their sound to its essence. Looping vocal tracks, bouncing beats and dubbed-out bass all coalesce in a hypnotic pattern. It's paired with a lyric video that's as equally dizzying.

DJ Khaled
- Shining featuring Beyoncé and Jay Z

DJ Khaled surprised us all when he dropped a star-powered new single "Shining" earlier this week. Hot on the heels of her impressive Grammy performance, the upbeat hip-hop track features Beyoncé, as well as Jay Z. When she sings "All of this winnin', I been losin' my mind," it comes off as a triumphant victory lap and an optimistic mantra for us all.

The Black Angels
- Currency

The Austin psych-rockers return with news of their first full-length in four years. Lead single "Currency" picks up where the band left off. It's a blistering indictment of the Trump administration, that's as loud, dark and cynical as it should be.

Little Dragon
- High

The Swedish electro-pop group are back with their first single since 2014. "High" is an appropriately hazy track, filled with slinky beats and a smooth R&B sound. Plus it's got a gorgeous, textile-heavy video to match. A perfect way to chill out this winter.

Mount Eerie
- Ravens

Ravens is the third offering from Mount Eerie's upcoming album A Crow Looked At Me and it's just as devastating as the songs that preceded it. Written in the wake of the death of Phil Elverum's wife Geneviève, "Ravens" is both an elegy and love song. It recounts the panic and sadness that comes with loss, but in the most ordinary of ways: selling her clothes, moving from their home. Each action is a form of grief being processed with every word sung.

Omarion - Distance

"Distance" is a delightful dance-floor romp off R&B crooner Omarion's forthcoming album Reasons. It's warm trop-pop vibes will leave you begging for summer. Check out the sexy video too. Shot in South Africa, it shows of the country's majestic beauty as well.

Jidenna
- Bambi

While perhaps better known as a rapper, "Bambi" proves Jidenna might be a bit more versatile than we previously thought. The dreamy song finds him reflecting on his player lifestyle and the impossibilities of settling down with his titular "Bambi." "If I weren't in this spider-web of mine/If grandfather never had seven wives/Then darling you would be love of my life," he croons, imagining what can never be.
