9 Songs You Need To Hear Right Now - 11/11/16

A rundown of the best tracks from the past two weeks featuring A Tribe Called Quest, Run The Jewels, Los Compesinos! and more

A Tribe Called Quest - We The People

Legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest blessed the music world with their final album, We got it from Here… Thank You For Your Service this week, and it sounds like vintage Tribe in the best possible way. The late Phife Dawg, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 45 due to complications from diabetes, sounds as sharp-tongued as ever (and that's saying something). The release was accompanied by an official lyric video for "We The People…" that animates the artwork for their classic album The Low End Theory. Give it and the entire record your time.

Day Wave
- Wasting Time

Day Wave makes some of the chillest music around, which is especially welcome in trying times. "Wasting Time" is Jackson Phillips latest single and his first since getting signed to Harvest Records. Much like his prior releases, it's wistful bedroom pop filtered through the haze of a California sunset. However there's a newfound immediacy this time around given the brisk guitars and sharper melody.

Modern Baseball
- Bart to the Future, Part 2: The Musical

By now you probably know that The Simpsons predicted the ridiculous reality of Donald Trump's imminent presidency. Philly punk rockers Modern Baseball named their latest song after the episode that prophesied it, as they do their best to examine and judge the least unqualified candidate in political history. "I wish that you were far away," they sing, "So far away from me." Don't we all wish that too. However to combat some of the evil, Modern Baseball's record label Run For Cover is currently selling music by all their bands at a "pay what you want" price, with all the proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. The label will match up to $5,000 in donations too. So dig into Modern Baseball's whole discography for a great cause!

Mr. Tophat feat. Robyn - Trust Me

Good news for fans of Swedish electro-pop. Two of the genre's top acts joined forces for a new EP. Robyn has teamed up with producer Mr. Tophat for three tracks of dark synth grooves. "Trust Me" is a ten-minute-long banger that stretches and squiggles in often unpredictable ways. The brisk tempo and frequently fluctuating sounds make for a thrilling listen, trust us.

The xx
- On Hold

"On Hold" is a euphoric first single off the The xx's upcoming third album I See You. While most of their previous music favored sparse synth soundscapes, "On Hold" is anything but. Featuring a prominent sample of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" the song shimmers and swirls, without taking a second to breathe. In other words, it takes a page from producer Jamie xx's DJ material. it's dance-floor ready from the get go.

Los Campesinos!
- I Broke Up in Amarante

It's been a few years since we last heard from the British twee-punk collective that is Los Campesinos!, but the band is back. "I Broke Up in Amarante" is their fist new song since 2013's No Blues, but it's just as punchy as anything they've ever released. According to frontman Gareth Campesinos!, the new single is about battling mental health issues when confronted with something you can't control. While his preferred coping mechanism entailed boozing around in Portugal, anyone can relate to this rallying cry, especially when the melody's this catchy.

Childish Gambino
- Me and Your Mama

This week, Childish Gambino — AKA modern-day renaissance man Donald Glover — released "Me and Your Mama," the first single from his anticipated third studio album Awaken, My Love. For fans of Gambino's earlier work, it's a change of pace. Gone is the conventional rapping and song structure in favor of a groovy sonic adventure. Count us as very excited to hear more.

Belly
- Consuela (feat. Young Thug & Zack)

Canadian rapper Belly is back with a new project InZomnia. The first song released from it is Consuela, a latin-tinged horn-heavy crossover track featuring resident oddball rapper Young Thug and Zack, brother of rapper French Montana. The song's booming bass is ready-made to rattle trunks.

Run the Jewels
- 2100 (feat. Boots)

On the heels of Donald Trump's shocking election, Run The Jewels unleashed a blistering new rap song, "2100." Though written at a prior date, the song is nothing if not of-the-moment. "For our friends, for our family. For everyone who is hurting or scared right now," the duo wrote in a statement. "We weren't planning on releasing it yet, but … well it feels right, now."
