14 Bands to Discover at SXSW

For nearly thirty years South by Southwest has remained one of the music industry's biggest events. While the festival's scope has exploded since its inception in the 1980s (even the President of the United States attends now!), discovery still remains at its core. As thousands descend upon Austin, TX next week to seek out the next big thing, here are a bunch of bands deserving of that title.

Advance Base
Owen Ashworth, formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, makes perfect music for the morning after. His latest project, Advance Base, combines pensive lyricism and mellow synths in a way that will seem especially poignant after a hangover. It's a rare voice of reason amongst the hype.
Most Scrobbled Track: Summer Music (27,200 Scrobbles)

Anderson .Paak
Paak is perhaps one of the more high-profile up-and-comers on this list. He's a frequent collaborator with Dr. Dre and contributed to six songs on Compton last year. Now on Dre's label and riding high off his debut full-length Malibu, he's destined for an amazing hip-hop future.
Most Scrobbled Track: The Bird (20,600 Scrobbles)

Car Seat Headrest
Car Seat Headrest embody such a strong DIY ethos, they're even named for the location where many of their early songs were recorded. Their shambolic energy of their music comes across even louder and bolder live.
Most Scrobbled Track: Something Soon (50,500 Scrobbles)

Diet Cig
While their debut EP clocks in at only 10 minutes, Diet Cig packs a big punch in a brief time. Equally fed up with indie scenesters and Ivy League grads, the punk duo take down all forms of pretension (many of which you're likely to encounter at SXSW) with sass you can dance to.
Most Scrobbled Track: Harvard (31,600 Scrobbles)

Dilly Dally
Dilly Dally are equal parts noisy and catchy, wrapping up their strong melodies in layers of fuzz and reverb. Their debut album Sore is post-grunge blast, but one that's also forward-looking enough to fit in at festivals in 2016.
Most Scrobbled Track: Desire (36,600 Scrobbles)

DMA's

If you like your Brit-rock from Australia, than you'll love this trio of lads. Their debut full-length album Hills End came out earlier this year and doubles as a time machine to 1996 Manchester, when Oasis were at their peak, with all the jangle and swagger that entails.
Most Scrobbled Track: Delete (44,400 Scrobbles)

Downtown Boys

Overtly political punk is rarely as much fun as the Downtown Boys make it seem. The bilingual group smashes patriarchy, capitalism, the prison-industrial complex and pretty much every other system of oppression the best way they know how - with kinetic energy and saxophone blasts.
Most Scrobbled Track: Monstro (9,676 Scrobbles)

HÆLOS
HÆLOS' eerie electronica definitely draws from the trip-hop sounds of Massive Attack and Portishead, yet there is something compelling and oddly cinematic about their music that extends far beyond their influences.
Most Scrobbled Track: Earth Not Above (28,200 Scrobbles)

Julien Baker
Among the slews of singer-songwriters you'll likely encounter at SXSW, Julien Baker's haunting, heartfelt voice stands out among her peers. Expect to hear lots of cuts off her debut album Sprained Ankle, including the ethereal "Everybody Does."
Most Scrobbled Track: Everybody Does (11,900 Scrobbles)

Kamaiyah

A Good Night in The Ghetto is quite the confident debut for the 21 year-old rapper Kamaiyah. The mixtape is filled with feel-good, party anthems perfect for a celebratory night out, whether it's at SXSW or beyond.
Most Scrobbled Track: How Does It Feel (1,248 Scrobbles)

Låpsley

We predict big things to come for Låpsley. At only 19 years-old, her smoky voice and shimmery synth pop recall an alternative Adele of sorts. With her debut album just released earlier this month expect the buzz to grow fast.
Most Scrobbled Track: Falling Short (241,700 Scrobbles)

Lil Yachty

The red-headed oddball caught the attention of Kanye West (He appeared at the Yeezy Season 3 fashion show at Madison Square Garden). But even without such a high-profile gig, the young Atlanta rapper's latest mixtape is strangely compelling in its own right.
Most Scrobbled Track: 1 Night

Oscar

Oscar Scheller's debut EP "Beautiful Words" is exactly that- a collection of gorgeous orchestral pop songs. With the lo-fi charms of Jens Lekman and a croon like Morrissey, this London native deserves just as much success.
Most Scrobbled Track: Daffodil Days (28,800 Scrobbles)

Porches

Porches music might be moody, but it won't bring the mood down. It's just chill enough for when you need a respite from dancing, but still upbeat enough to keep you bobbing your head. Their latest album Pool exemplifies this mid-tempo aesthetic, and boy do they excel at it.
Most Scrobbled Track: Forgive (40,200 Scrobbles)
