7 Songs You Need To Hear Right Now 3.17.17

7 new tracks to check out from Frank Ocean, Fleet Foxes, and more.

Fleet Foxes - Third of May / Odaigahara

Following an extended hiatus that lasted over five years, Fleet Foxes are back with more of the soaring folk music that made them so beloved in the first place. With "Third of May / Odaigahara" the band both refines and expands their sound. A nearly nine minutes long, its a lengthy epic, yet its captivating all the way through. The poetic lyrics, pastoral imagery and baroque instrumentation meld beautifully even as the song takes a unexpectedly progressive turns towards its final climax.

Charli XCX
- Lipgloss (feat. CupcaKKe)

For a pop star who's never been shy, "Lipgloss" is Charli XCX's brashest song yet. The final track on her latest mixtape is her most playful and euphemistic to date. With its chiptune-esque production and a killer feature from Chicago rapper CupcaKKe, its a glittery ode to sex in the digital age.

The Magnetic Fields
- '88 Ethan Frome

The Magnetic Fields have always been one of pop's most ambitious collectives. With their latest project lead songwriter Stephin Merrrit has crafter a 50 song memoir, one song for each year of his life. Standout "'88 Ethan Frome" recounts his college love affair with Edith Wharton's novel, a book that's as tragic and romantic as many of his best songs. Clearly, the influence is palpable.

Frank Ocean
- Chanel

Frank Ocean's dry spell ended last year with the release of two stellar albums and he looks to continue his prolific ways into 2017. Following "Slide," his trop-pop banger with Calvin Harris, he's released another new track "Chanel." The song find him singing about the titular brand over gauzy beats. The lyrics have even appeared in a new ad campaign, but regardless of any commercial purposed we'll take all the new Frank Ocean material we can get.

Hurray For The Riff Raff - Pa'lante

As Hurray For The Riff Raff, Alynda Segarra has been making some of the most celebrated folk music of the current century. With "Pa'lante" (the title roughly translates to "step forward") she utilizes that mantra to celebrate her Puerto Rican heritage. She acknowledges the way her culture has been questioned and attacked and ends with an ultimate call to arms to come together and reclaim that sense of identity without shame or stigma.

Snoop Dogg, BADBADNOTGOOD & Kaytranada - Lavender (Nightfall Remix)

The song, which already deals with police brutality only got more politcal, as the video featured a clownish parody of President Trump and a subsequent assassination attempt. He even took to twitter to denounce it, which probably only drew more people to watch it. Leaving Snoop to respond, "I feel like it's a lot of people making cool records, having fun, partying, but nobody's dealing with the real issue with this f--king clown as president, and the shit that we dealing with out here, so I wanted to take time out to push pause on a party record and make one of these records for the time being." Thanks, Snoop, for keeping it real.

Weezer
- Feels Like Summer

Weezer warm up with their latest song "Feels Like Summer." But with its layered synths and haphazard handclaps, it feels more like Twenty One Pilots to us. Guess they gotta keep up with what the kids are into these days.
