Andy Shauf: Hometown Hero (Last.fm Sessions)
Andy Shauf exclusively performs new songs from his 2015 record 'The Bearer or Bad News' At the Last.fm NYC studios
Beneath Canadian alt-folker Andy Shauf's unassuming demeanour is a rich and literate mind. While not exactly a newcomer, Shauf also isn't quite a household name just yet. His first album, Darker Days, was released in 2009. Since then, after a few subsequent releases, he set up shop in his parents' basement with a modest recording studio, some instruments and himself. Working in his subterranean home studio over a period of four years resulted in his latest release, The Bearer of Bad News, an 11 track storybook of an album. Strongly reminiscent at times of the best work of Randy Newman (clarinet abounds on Bearer) and Paul Simon, the album's gentle darkness is rather mesmerizing. The sparse production feels crisp and satisfying, no overused reverb effects or anything like that, and the vintage texture of the instruments Shauf used come through clearly.
