The words to "Wooden Ships" were written in the main cabin of David Crosbys boat "The Mayan". The music had already been written. Paul Kantner wrote two verses, Stephen Stills wrote one, Crosby added the bits at both ends. The first part was borrowed off a little Baptist church sign in Florida that said;

"If you smile at me
I will understand
'Cause that is something
Everybody everywhere does in the same language ".

It's a weird science fiction story, but one that could happen today. "Silver people on the shoreline" are guys in radiation suits. The authors imagined themselves as the few surviviors, escaping on a boat to create a new civilization. Later on, Jackson Browne said "What about all the people who get left behind?" and wrote "For Everyman" in response.
