Moreover, I would say that 'Black Celebration' was the first album to outbeat this one. While 'A Broken Frame' is their only weak (early) album that I don't really enjoy to listen. 'Speak & Spell' has many traces of upcoming Yazoo/Erasure approaches for obvious reasons, which looks great once you stop to expect to hear something similar to later Depeche Mode.

So 80's. If anyone under the age of 30 want to know what it was like in the 80's listen to this. So much synth. I can just see them on TOTP pretending to be playing music and miming. 🙂

Every time I feel down, this album just makes everything better. It's hilarious, cheesy synth pop.

it has hold up pretty well compared to some of their other albums (ie some great reward, black celebration). Mostly cause its pure analogue sound and percussion.

Have to say this is superb and so upbeat. Lovely zippy melodies and basslines. It may not be the best DM album, but is so catchy and fun and instantly makes you happy. Thank you Vince Clarke for DM Part 1. I have to say I hated this album when I first heard it, but I love it now in a cheesy way - it's of its time, but if we didn't have this, then who knows if we'd have had DM or not?

THANKS GOD VINCE CLARK LEFT THE BAND <- With hand on heart I must admit I'm glad too. Not that I don't like these first songs but I think if Vince have stayed in the band, Depeche Mode wouldn't become what they are today. It's in a great deal thanks to Martin that they withstood the test of time and - it's amazing to see that the band which has been existing for over 30 years now is still developing.

Superb debut. Really, I feel ashamed now for not picking this up earlier. And I agree with CGholy - such lovely, intriguing cover art.

DM, you had me until you said "You're so pretty (P-R-E, double-T-Y)"...but it was the 80's.
