“bread & butter” marks Gunna’s first release following his December 2022 release after he plead guilty to one count of racketeering charges.

Throughout the track, Gunna speaks on several people in the rap industry such as Young Thug, Lil Durk, Lil Baby, and Pierre “P” Thomas, the founder of Quality Control Music.

Gunna tackled the public response following his taking a plea deal in the YSL RICO case where several rappers decided to distance themselves from the Atlanta rapper in order to maintain their solidity towards Young Thug and YSL.

Rapping in a slow and smooth cadence over a guitar beat, Gunna also claimed he was tricked by the district attorney into taking the plea and that it was by mistake.

The official music video directed by LEFF sees Gunna in a black-and-white setting — possibly referring to a deeper meaning behind it as a black-and-white situation one where things are easy to decide right and wrong. This can play into the track’s title as one’s “bread and butter” is a phrase to refer to one’s source of income, suggesting that due to taking a plea, the industry is attempting to make it harder for him to earn a livelihood.
