Experimental artist Julianna Barwick release her third album, Nepenthe, on August 20th via Dead Oceans. The follow-up to 2011′s The Magic Place and last year’s OMBRE project with Helado Negro was recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland and produced by musician Alex Somers (Sigur Rós, Jónsi). According to a press release, the word nepenthe – a magic drug of forgetfulness used to wipe out grief, referenced often in ancient Greek literature – struck a deep chord with Barwick, who had experienced a death in the family during the recording process and felt especially isolated. Louisiana-bred, Brooklyn-based recording artist Julianna Barwick crafts ethereal, largely wordless soundscapes, all of which are built around multiple loops and layers of her angelic voice.
