In the prequel novel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” Lucy Gray Baird writes and composes this song in reference to the hanging of Arlo Chance. Arlo set off an explosion in the mines of District 12 in an attempt to sabotage the production of coal that ultimately ended up killing three men. During Chance’s hanging he called out to his lover Lil, telling her to run. This final plea was echoed by the surrounding Jabber jays which cried out “Run Lil, run!,” and devolved into mocking jays creating a chorus of wails.
