This is simply one of the greatest pieces of music ever conceived. Like the finest 19th century opera, it is a mastery in both musical and lyrical expression. The often happy arrangements coupled with sophisticated yet simple lyrics work just perfectly. Every line here is quotable, not even half a word wasted. The message, about searching for identity in the ever-confusing world, is as haunting and poetic as only the post-60s revolution would be capable of. A lot of music, and art in general, from that time, in my opinion, has stuck in its age with its naive optimism about social changes. Sly decides to come down to reality – the era of sex, drugs and rock&roll has eaten its own tail. There is a hauntingly fatalist quality about this album. Sort of reminds me of Wagner's "Twilight of the Gods". When you're estranged by God, there is nowhere to go but down...

One of the greatest albums of the 70s from one of the greatest American music groups of all time. A lot of people aren't aware of how truly great Sly & The Family Stone were on their first several albums, which is a real shame, because up to and including this record (the next couple had their moments as well, but the drugs and paranoia had begun to take hold) they are just untouchable, with this one being the pinnacle. It's a very DARK record, and in that way it's upsetting because formerly this group spoke to the possibility of racial harmony and was so infectiously optimistic (without being cheesy or sappy); here it seems that a lot of that hope for something better has been sapped and replaced with understandable rage and depression. But everything that's good for you isn't always easy to experience at first, so I urge new listeners to stick with it and realize the gifts this record has in store.

Track 12 might be the funkiest of the whole album, and it's near the bottom of # of listens?!
