Moon in June is a nineteen minute vocal tour de force by drummer / lead singer Robert Wyatt. He began writing it while staying with Jimi Hendrix in LA after the Soft Machine's first American tour had ended. According to Wyatt, Hendrix offered some advice on a difficult transition and demonstrated an alternative chord sequence. Wyatt preferred to do it his own way, saying, in a live Q&A, " —— me! I turned down a guitar lesson from Jimi Hendrix!"
