Glossolalia is a southern term that means "speaking in tongues", Vic had recounted in an interview that although he is an atheist, songwriting is akin to his religious experiences, and "speaking in tongues" is an accurate description to how he writes his songs. Vic said of this song: "the melody comes from my friend Jeff Mangum, he came over to my house and sang me a melody and said he wanted me to put lyrics to it.".

Vic Chesnutt (November 12, 1964 - December 25, 2009) was a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who lived in Athens, Georgia, United States. Around 1985, Chesnutt moved to Athens and joined the band, The La-Di-Da's.
