It is a hundred years ago to the day that Elliott Carter was born on 11 December 1908, and his life has spanned the whole of the twentieth century. Following a new-classical period, Carter developed his own powerful musical language, characterised by ingenious polyphonic interweaving and rhythmic flexibility. Carter is still composing today. In 1989, he wrote the light-hearted and brilliant Luimen especially for the Nieuw Ensemble. This portrait concert provides a wonderful sample sheet of his extensive chamber music oeuvre, interspersed by tributes from four of his colleagues.

Words that crop up regularly over the years when referring to the American composer Elliott Carter are ‘indefatigable’ and ‘invincible’. Now he has reached the age of 100, should we start to consider the possibility that both the man and his oeuvre are attempting immortality? Along with the Arditti Quartet and the Nieuw Ensemble, the Asko Ensemble are paying tribute to this survivor of the founders of American modernism.

Since the death of Copland, Elliott Carter has been regarded as America’s greatest composer. Originally, he wrote in a new-classical style, but from 1948 he started to develop his own style. He succeeds in combining the European avant-garde of Boulez and the American ultra-modernism of Ives into a unique personal sound. Carter wrote his First string quartet in 1950-1951, after a chastening one-year stay in the desert of Arizona. His Fourth and Fifth string quartets were created in 1985 and 1995 respectively.Elliott Carter 100 year anniversary
