The title track and introduction to american dream is a spoken word from 21 Savage’s mother, Heather Carmillia Joseph. She begins the album by outlining her son’s career in the context of her own life, describing harsh choices and persevering through difficult circumstances so that her family—specifically, her son, 21—could have a better life and achieve his “American dream.” In hindsight, we know that he became a successful, wealthy rapper and musician. Via Heather’s commentary, we can assume the title of this track and the album as a whole are reflective of Savage’s mindset now that he is this far along on his journey in life. When the introduction ends, it smoothly transitions into “all of me,” a song that fittingly paints a picture of 21’s harsh upbringing and key events across his life.
