Mixing some strong disco influences with the young English artist’s typical mellow style, the second single from Alfie Templeman’s debut album "Mellow Moon", “Broken” tells us about the small things we take for granted in our lives.

The song was first premiered at 6 P.M. GMT on February 2, 2022, as part of BBC Radio 1’s Future Sounds show, while the music video for the track premiered slightly later, at 7:30 PM.

A snippet of the chorus was originally posted by Templeman to his TikTok page on 28 January, 2022.

After the song’s premiere on BBC Radio 1, Templeman talked to presenter Clara Amfo about the song’s origins and what it is about:

"It was last year. I was having a bit of a wobble, can’t lie. My job, essentially, is being me, so sometimes it can definitely feel like you’re a product walking about rather than a person. So, the song in a nutshell is basically about that, and it’s the everyday things that I never took for granted before, and then realised, in the pandemic, how important it was to me. It’s those little things that lifted me up in a lot of ways. The song is quite the opposite, it’s talking about all of the things I picked up on myself, like getting up way too late, and everything was a bit too backwards for me in the pandemic. I was shielding for so long and had to reflect on how out of order my life was."

"This is a bit of an anthem for people my age, referencing things that I was thinking in the pandemic, all the little wobbles of being a teen and figuring yourself out. Analysing yourself is an important part of growing up and realising who you are. In the last couple years, it’s something that I’ve been a lot more open with myself about. I can speak to my mind a lot more and realise my flaws. With “Broken”, it’s realising where I messed up in the past and realising I can’t just stay in bed all day. I have to get up and make something out of it. It’s one of the most important songs on the record because it’s so upfront and so honest and real."

In an interview with NME, Templeman revealed that he took inspiration from Coldplay for the recurring guitar riff throughout the song, which he originally wrote when he was 14.

The guitar riff in question bears a striking resemblance to Coldplay’s 2015 song “Adventure of a Lifetime”. In the same interview, the young English artist stated that he had taken inspiration from the highly-influential guitarist Nile Rodgers, as well.
