The nostalgic “October Song” recalls the death of Winehouse’s pet canary named Ava. The title of the song presumably recalls the month that Ava died, although Winehouse has been known to refer to the song simply as “Ava.”
Following Winehouse’s own untimely death in July 2011, The Globe and Mail published an article that quoted Winehouse’s relationship with the bird, saying:
The bird, Ava, named after the tempestuous dark-haired actress Ava Gardner, would wake the English singer in the morning, “twittering away,” Winehouse said, “and rocking on her little swing.” The bird’s death left her heartbroken, but with some solace. “It was a sad time,” she recalled, “but I got a good song out of it.”
