As the first official single from "Oxnard", “Tints” marks the third collaboration between Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar. They had previously linked up on “Deep Water” from Dr. Dre’s Compton album, and “Bloody Waters” from the Black Panther soundtrack. On October 4th, 2018, the song debuted via Zane Lowe’s “World Record” on Beats1.
This is Anderson’s third single of 2018, following “‘Til It’s Over” and “Bubblin.” The track was first teased on September 23rd, 2018, with a picture posted on Anderson .Paak’s Instagram account. A stylized version of the photo also appears directly above the title on the cover art.
The artwork is reminiscent of a movie poster, with both Kendrick and Anderson depicted as mechanics. They are also wearing Nike Cortez sneakers, of which Kendrick has a signature model.
On the day of the song' release, Anderson .Paak gave details about collaborating with Kendrick via a Beats1 interview:
"'I love working with him. Some people you can trust to just send it and they gonna send it back and it’s gonna be flames. I just knew that would be the case with him. I’d been sending him tracks through the recording process and I had no idea this was gonna be the one and all of a sudden I looked at my phone and had something on iMessage and he said ‘I gave this one a shot.’ I sent him five or 10 tracks man. I love that he got on this one it’s so perfect.'"
He also shared this nugget:
"'I’ve still not been able to work with him in the studio one-on-one. Everything we’ve done has been over the web.'"
