This song was incredibly meaningful to me aged 16, growing up in a church family, and this album came out just around the time I was starting to question it all for myself. When I saw Arcade Fire live last week, Win introduced it as, "We wrote this when George W. Bush had just been elected for the 2nd time. We got through that bullshit, and we're gonna get through this bullshit too". Tears in my eyes every time I listen, for those reasons.

I must have heard this song 200 times, but it's still as good as it was on my first listen.

The melody is similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km3zQkMl0iI. Apparently the lyrics (to the song in the video) are based on an 16th century poem by St. John of the Cross (which at the same time is based on a song from the New Testament in the Bible) that basically talks about someone's intimate relationship with religion by using a metaphor about a lady meeting her lover. Props to Arcade Fire for doing their homework!
