@Epsilon_X2008 have you stopped trolling people yet? You've done this already on the Human Abstract band page, now here too? Don't bother trying to prove your points or your own perspectives, you're just being incompetent now.

You're nit-picking at what the progressive metal genre should be, not what Art by Numbers should be.

@Shuttyjohnbutty... you've got a point there, mmm, I won't complain about BTBAM, I don't like all of their material, but they are still a good band, and yeah... prog metal, although heavily 'metalcore' infused, which I (99%) don't like. Still, my initial point was that ABN wasn't metal, nor prog metal, because wanking sweeps in every song is not prog (that's why sweep pickin' maestros like Yngwie aren't considered PROG) ... specially if every song has almost the same structure. ABN is not original (repetitive chugg riff + sweep over = not prog), is not creative, almost every song sounds the same, they suck and they are pretentious by tagging themselves as "Prog" musicians, which they clearly aren't. BTW, the whole Pantera thing you said makes no sense.

Ok, I'll humour @TheWatcho... Although honestly I can't tell if they're trolling, or just stupid. You can't say a band isn't [this genre] because they weren't founded in [this genres] boundaries. You know that Pantera were a glam rock band at first? Yeah? Proper hair metal? Did they not become one of the biggest hardcore / metal bands going? Surely if both BTBAM and ABN are 'influnced by, [therefore they are of the same genre as, because logic] metalcore bands', which itself is influenced by metal, that's just a really roundabout way of saying that you don't really know what you're talking about. tl;dr BTBAM sound more like dream theater than black flag, therefore they're prog metal

@Jaapnac: You are clearly implying that Art By Numbers and BTBAM belong to the Dream Theater's genre... that's the error. Leprous, Seventh Wonder, Spheric Universe Experience, Spiral Architect, Opeth, Pain Of Salvation... THOSE ARE PROG METAL BANDS, because their sound is founded within metal boundaries, and they push it, to progressive heights... BTBAM sound is not founded in metal, they are pretty much a hardcore band going technical, and regarding to guitar tone, and their sound, they obviously aren't metalheads who wanted to push boundaries, even if they put some "metal riff" here and there, their material is clearly more influenced by hardcore and metalcore, and ABN is definitely not a Metal band. Also, If someone says "why are u here u dun't like ABN, fuck off hurr durr"... I'm here because I like to discuss these things, that's all.

Well, DT (pre-SDOIT) actually compliment their "wank" with good riffs, good melodies, amazing counterpoints, smooth transitions and groundbreaking compositions (remember... in the 90's DT paved a path for Progressive Metal)... Not like most of these """prog""" bands that don't know how to connect different sections within a song... just to name a few, BTBAM, THA or PTH... all those "progressive metalcore-ish" acts have nothing to do against real progressive metal... at least PTH are funny enough to be listened. ABN is not progressive, their music is not original, and they are not metal. Being a classically trained musician doesn't makes you a good composer, these guys are the proof of that.

A tasteless wankfest. Tasteless metalcore chuggin' riffing, then a sweep that came out of a "30 exercises to teach you to shred" book, then a generic chugg, then a sweep, all this with a piano or a synth over the wankfest... OH HOW ORIGINAL OH GAWD DIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE B4!!!!!11!! The very same reason to why I don't like The Human Abstract.

"progressive music should have a song at least over 5 or 6 minutes" was just quoted to show the original poster how stupid he sounded there. sure, nocturne was kind of innovative 6 years ago, but since then the style has been copied so much you can barely call it progressive anymore.

All right I lied, two tracks that are over the 5 min mark. Big whoo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocturne_%28The_Human_Abstract_album%29

I'd have to disagree with ABN being pop-punk. I don't know of any pop-punk bands that implement high-level of musical composition. When I think of pop-punk I'm thinking of like a band like Short on Time, and those guys aren't even that impressive, they just produce tracks with emphasized guitar melodies, and mediocre vocals. So if this band is not progressive then you are telling me that the track "Man in the Box" is not progressive? It reminds me a lot of many of the tracks seen in THA's "Nocturne" album. Still, they are considered progressive. There were no tracks in Nocturne that passed 5 minutes. Not hatin'--just sayin' that your statement "progressive music should have a song at least over 5 or 6 minutes " is invalid here. Sorry.

True, but that's what makes them so special because they have elements of all these styles and don't dip to much in any of them. Take in mind this is just their first release, just imagine what they can make on their next one!

It's a good album but progressive music should have a song at least over 5 or 6 minutes and these guys don't even have one over 4. It seems they just kind of gave up on some of the songs, and I know they could have pushed themselves further. I'm digging it nonetheless though.
