and which 1-2 are the bangers here? The albums from the last 10 years sound like a single song to me. Same tone on the vocals, same guitar riffs, same drum pattern. It used to be my favorite band, ever since I first heard The Clown Is Dead back in 1998. But now I barely listen to them.

The last original ("I see fire" and a hew from Ballads IV do not count) song that I liked from them is "Too late" which is 2010. Since then it has been all downhill.

I think their last two relevant albums are The Crest and Circle of the Oath. It gets more stale and weaker after that. It's always been samey-samey in every department, but for the last 10 years or so both the compositions and Gioeli have gotten somewhat weaker, lazier.

The heavy metal version of butt rock. Still has some enjoyable moments, though.

Same album, different year. The man has no ideas left in his tank and steals his own riffs and hooks. Just retire already, please.

Wait - why is that Wings of the Storm track so yugely popular? Has it been in some TV show or Guitar Hero game or somesuch?

I agree, kind of. I haven't listened to that album, I only know about the first two albums and the three most recent (not counting Sign of The Times which is just around the corner). But comparing those first two with the new, the three newest records all sound the damn same.

Yeah, they've been notorious in sounding identical in their newer works. But for the love of everything, try Oceans of Time and The Masquerade Ball! The magnum opuses of the band.

I have been a fan of the band since 1998 - was my favorite band ever. But it is sad to see them getting so boring to me. The new album is only new, because of the new name and year of release. There is nothing new to it otherwise. To be honest, it sounds just like any other of their previous three albums, besides the new lyrics. Although, Gioeli's vocals negate that difference pretty easily. I don't know, maybe they need to replace a vocalist and work on an album for 4-5 years. I don't need a new album almost every year if it sounds exactly the same, I want to see some progress, innovation, enjoy their art. ARP is not Apple to release a new iPhone with a tiny tweak every year , but unfortunately they are becoming a commercial corporation - plain money.

It's kind of funny how we are always discovering good music, but the real good stuff was right in front of us the whole time.

New album sounds as much ARP as ever, but it is a bit lousy in my opinion. It's wrong, in Pell's case, to accuse the man of the lack of ideas (because every album has the same type of songs, with the same hooks, in almost the same order anyway :D), but this time those songs just weren't as good as they were on, say, Circle of the Oath and The Crest. Also, the only thing that's changed is the drum sound and the drumming - well duh, since drummer has changed. And if someone pointed me with a gun and made me say which album has the best Johnny Gioeli vocals, I'd have to say The Masquerade Ball, although the man has managed to sound almost identical for 15 years now. There is no him on the verge of breaking his voice anymore, but he's otherwise as flawless and awesome as ever. Good album, sounds as Pell as possible, but the songs we have seemingly heard many times in recent years weren't as good this time. Rondinelli's drumming (hits lighter? Or just different skins?) didn't help much.

Hmm... The number of scrobbled songs by AXP seem to be decreasing in my library. I had over 400plays last week. Today it's just 361. Wierd.

Into The Storm is impressive... But I must say that the absolutely most killing song on the new album is Hey Hey My My. The power it delivers is incredible.

New album "Into The Storm" on January, 2014! :) http://www.axel-rudi-pell.de/index1.html Can't wait! I wait for absolutely no surprises. ;D But still kick-ass hard rock / power metal still continuing in the vein of Ritchie Blackmore. The old dog doesn't learn new tricks, and in this case he doesn't have to. I love ARP even though it's "always the same"! :D -- I wonder if there's going to be another "Part 2". A song from Shadow Zone now? ;)

Great guitarrist and great band. Always deliver honest, solid, convincing quality in the way the fans would expect it. In a world of constant change (at least on the face of it, because actually all remains the same all the time), Axel Rudi Pell is kind of a bastion of calm and just stands there, solid as a rock. Also the band has always excellent, highly gifted singers. And I must confess I like their ballads and cover versions ;) .

Mmh. The Masquerade Ball is! ^_^ Heck, it's pretty much flawless. Even the most filler-trackish songs like Hot Wheels have great groove in them. And great keyboard sound. Stuff like that that make them be not-fillers in the end. :D The drum sound is awful for my tastes, but one learns to live with it when the music is so freaking good all the time! \m/
