Love her to pieces, but this was frustrating. Never thought she'd release something so forgettable ): Fuck Love has to be the most uninteresting song she's ever put out. The ballads + Holding Back are fine tho.

Hmm.. after a few listens, there are a handful of non-single tracks that I really like but overall, as one body of work, I'm not feeling Serpentina. Something about her vocals and the production is off. I hate to compare it to her previous albums, but honestly, I listen to any track from Goddess and The Altar, or even III right after this, and it's more obvious that the quality has gone down a bit.. :\ From the girl who wrote deep-cutting songs like Drowning (did you see what I did there?) , Waiting Game, Beggin For Thread, Gemini Feed, Haunt, Trainwreck, etc it's really not her best work. Also, The Devil was a really good single but it doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the tracks. It's interesting because Better was left off The Altar, and Underdog wasn't on III..

It is another more than solid release, indeed. Why do critics hate her so much though? I do not get it. She has been dropping top-shelf pop for years now and barely gets any recognition for it, other than lukewarm reviews. It kind of pisses me off to be honest.

Nah if anything I’m probs understating how much online music heads loved her in the Goddess days. Like she was everywhere in the 2014 indie scene being hailed as the next best new thing which was reflected in a bunch of tv, ad, playlist, best of xyz, etc placements and word of mouth from said critics which raised her profile. Same happened on a smaller scale for The Altar. With Metacritic Goddess has a 74 average based on 22 reviews, and The Altar 70 for 17. Those are pretty good scores when you factor in how many diff critics have rated it (with enough high scores to keep the average up) and the fact that critics are more likely to be tougher on debut/sophomore albums due to artist newness and/or less bias

As for the Ellies and Zaras of the world scoring higher than her they’re pop. Two diff sets of critics and standards. Ironically, both of them are seen as better than your average pop star due to style/talent which pop critics loveee cuz a lot of pop is generic, so they’ll score higher by virtue of being “unique” in a cookie cutter genre. Banks is in the indie genre which has a lotttttt of competition and had SO much good stuff come out in the last decade or so. Pure Heroine by Lorde and AM by Artic Monkeys came out the year before Goddess, and LP1 by Fka Twigs came out the same year. Aurora’s first album, Frank Ocean’s Blonde, and Solange’s A Seat at the Table all came out the same year as The Altar, and these are just the albums I can remember. Add in the fact that a lot of indie critics are kinda snobby to begin with, and I’m honestly not surprised by her scores. To them she has the attributes they like yes, but she works in a genre where others do too and they’re better

I am not going to argue about how she was or was not loved by indie heads in the early 2010's, because I was not following her back then, but I was talking about critics; an no raw data is reflecting a lot of what you are saying in the first of these two messages. Also: you have to release something incredibly generic or awful to reach sub 60 numbers on Metacritic. And: I think you are giving critics way too much credit for how they review albums; it sounds like they are writing complex dissertations just because they are navigating through different genres from review to review. Look at The Telegraph for example, they gave Serpentina 4/10; the only other album they gave an equally bad score to this year is Kanye's Donna 2, and earlier than that you have to go back to the beginning of 2021 to find another 4/10 review which is Justin Bieber's latest album. It is all a bit peculiar at least.

I love how fancy and refined the production is, it feels she's putting mud on my face while doing a skincare session on me and telling me loving is fucked up
