Band Nah or 나상현씨밴드 have released a lot of music since 2019. Numerous singles and EPs continue to grow the band’s discography, but Zanchi is the first time I’m listening to the band. The band is described as indie and rock which accurately describes the foundation of the music, but moving broader Band Nah are pulling shoegaze and psychedelic rock elements into the music as well. It’s a very specific style that the band is using and could be inaccurately compared to Hyukoh where I see a bigger similarity to WE ARE THE NIGHT.

“Wish” is the album introduction and halfway through the song the album really starts. It has a big audioscape opening with the guitars pushing the environment open before the audio collapses into the vocals. The song is strangely bright even though it has a brooding guitar riff. “Wish” melds with “Life” and changes the tone and tempo very quickly. It’s a laid back and almost CHS beach rock style. It doesn’t feel the need to rush and continues to add more elements on top of one another.

You get more beach rock and funk on “Blue” and “Oversleep.” This adds some interesting variety on the album. “Oversleep” doesn’t sound like it should be on the album because it’s a broader pop rock, almost pop-forward track if the tempo was faster. Zanchi could be described as a smooth album. The different styles of music give different windows into the band’s composition style, but every song glides over the tempo and gives listeners something fun to hear.

The album definitely opens up in the back half allowing the band to use the rock foundation while adding a lot of other genre elements. It’s usually easy to pinpoint a specific musical style, but Band Nah move between styles without much effort. The more shoegaze style tracks are my style, but every track on the album will find a fan with someone.

Zanchi is one of those albums that might get hidden under a lot of other releases, but when it finds the right audience, it will blow up really quickly. There isn’t a weak song and over the 32 minutes, provides one of the strongest audio experiences to end last year.
