“Oxygen” is the lead single from Beach Bunny’s sophomore album "Emotional Creature", and was their first release of new music since their "Blame Game" EP nine months prior. The single also closely followed their appearance on a remix of MARINA’s “I Love You But I Love Me More” exactly one week earlier.

In a press release for the single, songwriter Lili Trifilio explained that the song is “about the perils of navigating romantic feelings, the joy that comes with allowing love to happen, and the act of letting go of the anxiety and our inner voices that make us feel undeserving of love”.

On October 10, 2021, the band began teasing a “new era” on social media with several posts featuring sci-fi imagery. After sharing a release date and pre-save link on October 22, the single’s title was officially announced on October 26 alongside a snippet of the song’s lyrics.

The single artwork showcases the band’s new sci-fi aesthetic, featuring an illustration of an unconscious Trifilio being carried by a purple alien reminiscent of the DC Comics character Doctor Manhattan. The artwork was hand-painted by Paul Mann.

"’Oxygen’ is a song about the perils of navigating romantic feelings, the joy that comes with allowing love to happen, and the act of letting go of the anxiety and our inner voices that make us feel undeserving of love. I wanted it to have a playful vibe with anthemic choruses and a big, blissed out ending."
