The opening track of Depression Cherry can be seen as a bridge from the preceding album Bloom to a new era for the duo.

“Levitation” uses motives from Bloom’s closing track, “Irene.” The bass line and the piano pattern of “Irene” appear reversed during the last third of “Levitation.”

The lyrics could further hint at “Irene.” “There’s a place I want to take you” might allude to the “strange paradise” mentioned in the chorus of “Irene.”

In 2022, it was revealed that Levitation was written about Rose Mayr and Elizabeth Nass, two Maryland natives who were tragically killed in a train derailment in 2012. The lyrics hint at the gruesome circumstances of their deaths. This was confirmed by a color-inverted photo of the two hidden in the lyric page for Levitation on Beach House's website.

(6/11/19): “The end and the beginning often have a similar feeling, and we feel this song captures that paradox.” ~ Alex, Baltimore
(2/2/20): “Meditating on the connection between youthful joy and the kind of catharsis that is excepting death/mortality…. Levitation is just such a beginner, it only works as a set opener…we took it out of the set but had to bring it back because we missed it.” ~ Reddit
