Big Sean’s and Post Malone’s first collaboration is a reflection on the environments the two artists grew up in. Sean draws a parallel between his family and wolves, implying dominance and loyalty to the pack. Big Sean detailed in an October 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly:
"' my family growing up. Everybody’s in there, my grandma, my mom, my brother — it’s like they were a pack of wolves and they were the sweetest and strongest.'"
Sean revealed in the same interview that the track originally featured a verse from A$AP Rocky, but the guest appearance was later repurposed for another song on the album.
On September 29, 2019, producing duo Take A Daytrip previewed a snippet of the song via Instagram Live. Post Malone’s involvement in "Detroit 2" was later hinted to in the album teaser.
"Post Malone heard it early. I ran into him at a restaurant, and we were kicking it. It was like a mutual-respect-type of exchange. We were both working, so I’m like, “I got this song. See what you think.” When I sent it to him he was like, “Man, this is incredible. I have to, let’s do it.”
