2. from rural illinois comes bridal party, an artist who really lies halfway between accessible and challenging – balancing both with remarkable precision. born again on a dark star is comprised of simple songs – mostly clean electric guitar, odd atmospherics a la sunburned hand of the man, and vocals that resemble a version of stephin merritt on some serious peyote. oh, and hey, there’s a song called “under peyote.” makes sense. bridal party, in a way, resembles a more restrained and freeform version of liars, though bridal party is unequivocally on an original tip. the rhythm paces along at a syrupy rate, guitar sounds and noise flourishes creak, crack, and creep in and out, with michael’s unsettling baritone pipes acting as the glue that keeps the noisy fucked folk together. it’s refreshing to hear a sonically and tonally adventurous album like this wherein i had to give it a couple of listens to figure out where bridal party is coming from. i love that. it’s very unusual in the best of senses, and with a free download available at their bandcamp, there’s no reason to not give ‘em a listen. rock and roll will never die, it will hit you in the eye. - thedecibeltolls.com
