“Lies” is the first song that CHVRCHES released, initially under the name CHURCHES. An early version of the song was first posted exclusively to the Neon Gold Records blog in May 2012, where it was described as a “godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy”. The band’s identity was anonymous upon its first release, and the song was only accompanied by a picture of nuns in masks.

A re-recorded version would later appear on their 2013 debut album The Bones of What You Believe, and this version would be formally released as a single on December 2, 2013.

The song’s lyrics can be interpreted multiple ways. A common interpretation is that it is about an abusive and manipulative relationship, with singer Lauren Mayberry taking the perspective of the abuser.

In a 2013 interview with Timeout, Iain Cook discussed the band’s goal when “Lies” was initially released in 2012:

“At that early stage, there wasn’t really any goal other than to put a song out on the internet and see what kind of response we got. We weren’t really into the band at that point in time; we’ve just been writing songs in the studio and we’ve never played anything live. So we didn’t even know if it was something that we could or even wanted to do. We noticed that the reaction we got on Neon Gold was unbelievable, way beyond what we expected. Then we thought, ‘Okay, now we have to figure out how to play this live!’“
