Popularised by Cat Steven's hit version of 1972, this song has a long history. It was first published as a Christian hymn in 1931 with lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon to a Gaelic tune known as Bunessan. The same tune was also used for a 19th Century carol "Child In The Manger", with lyrics by Mary Macdonald. Cat Steven's version is notable for its bridging episodes taking it from the key of C to D for the third verse and returning to C for the 4th verse
