“Amoeba” is perhaps the most groovy track from Clairo’s sophomore album "Sling". Amoebas are unicellular organisms, and the noun comes from the greek amoibe which means “change, alteration, exchange”. As stated by the singer, the theme of the song is in fact changing her priorities:

It’s about prioritizing the wrong things. I’d go out on tour and forget to call my family and my friends, forget to eat, then come home and realize my hair’s falling out because I’m not taking care of myself.

On August 6, 2021, Rolling Stone posted a video of Clairo and producer Jack Antonoff breaking down the track, explaining some of the lyrics and production.

"The main meaning of was – in a weird way, it’s me scolding myself about my actions, about prioritizing the wrong things You haven’t called your family in two weeks, you’re just going to parties, trying to impress the wrong person and putting your energy in the wrong places. Being able to acknowledge that and change that was a big part of Sling. It was really just about seeing my own thoughts, questioning why they were happening and how I can change them and better myself." - via triple j
