"bubble gum" is about a feeling of regret. “ 'cause i swallowed the bubble gum, oh and these 7 years will be pretty dumb" when you swallow bubblegum, it gets "stuck" in your stomach, same as holding a regret. it’s often said that bubble gum takes 7 years to fully digest in your stomach. in reality, that’s not true at all. after a few days, bubble gum leaves our bodies as it should. the bubble gum in this song could be a metaphor for a negative moment in life that lingers on, just as the common belief with gum inside our bodies. it’s also interesting how she doesn’t mention swallowing the gum accidentally, she even says “it’s a curse”. she could do this willingly whilst knowing it could hurt her, describing the uncertainty of love.
