This is such a true statement. Right at home among At The Gates - Gardens Of Grief or Cemetary - An Evil Shade Of Grey. Honestly it's the best of all the death metal styles of the time rolled into one. They made a DM album so good they couldn't even do another to top it so they changed genres.

Quite a good album. I'd say it as an admirer of old Autopsy works, like "Mental Funeral", "Severed Survival". After listening to this album it reminded me those works, mentioned afore. Such a dark atmosphere here, from straightforward raw death metal with doom metal influences in-between. Great album.

Soulside fucking journey превосходный дебют. Однако, есть подозрения, что дэт метал шведского образца – музыка чисто студийного плана. Большинству команд, начинавшим своё восхождение с этого жанра упорно не удавалось полностью передать свою же музыку живьём. Чтоб далеко не ходить – пример Tiamat, по словам Эдлунда они не умели играть так как Entombed, о чём свидетельствуют их концертные выступления, где мрачный вязкий олд скул дэт с оригинального альбома Sumerian cry превратился в сырую размазню а-ля блэк метал 80-х – более быстрый, менее плотный стафф, теряющий всю студийную атмосферу. Возможно все прочие банды и сменили стиль по этой причине. Разве что Grave удаётся играть на сцене без потери нужной атмосферы и вязкости.

Так конкретно "Sumerian Cry" и был дэт-металом именно что образца 80-ых (тогда такое то дэтом, то блэком называли - предпочитаю первый вариант), от классической шведятины там только звук. Как и "Soulside Journey" альбом по сонграйтингу и композиторскому подходу скорее американский, нежели шведский.

Отнюдь! Как раз именно с Autopsy их "думовитость" объединяет и нелогичные структуры, а использование клавишных и sci-fi - с Nocturnus. "Sumerian Cry" - это дроч, скорее, на бразильский дэт-треш, Possessed и Hellhammer; у Entombed и иже с ними совсем другие корни и настолько имбецильно-примитивно они никогда не звучали. Причём у Tiamat это и на последующих релизах сохранились, некоторые риффы на "Astral Sleep" и "Clouds" откровенно хеллхаммерского градуса дебилизма.

Блин, а я уже и забыла про Отопси. Точнее, даже слышать толком не доводилось. Влияние Хэллхаммера на Тиамат 91/92, где Юхан и Томас Петерссон (другой только) на гитарах, пусть менее, чем на Треблинку, но конечно, слышится, и это лучше, чем, например, влияние метлы и того же Тиамата на ранний Лайкофтирс. Ранние Парадайс лост тоже были под влиянием Venom и кельтов, но дэтовая основа дебютника преобладает.

If this were an only album by some otherwise unknown Death Metal band, it would be regarded as one of the best records ever made in the style and the band responsible would have a mystique about them that no other group could match. As it is, people -- whether they love or hate what Darkthrone became in the intervening years -- come to this one with preconceived notions and either look down on it because it's of pretty much an entirely different style (there are still some Death Metal elements on A Blaze in the Northern Sky, so there is a connection there, but very little of their remaining stuff has any easily observed connection to Soulside Journey) or say it's the only worthwhile thing they ever recorded because they hate Black Metal/Darkthrone's brand of Black Metal. I think that's really unfortunate because this is a goddamn fantastic Death Metal album and deserves to be appreciated on its own terms rather than just as what it is or isn't as relates to Darkthrone. Classic album.

Underrated AF. Love the cover, the vocals, the lyrics (and song titles-Sunrise over Locus Mortis sounds so dope), the riffs obviously kick ass majorly. The rhythym section is phenomenal here. The whole cold, spacey and vast dark occultistic/sci-fi atmosphere is probably the best thing in here.

a good death metal album proving the band is not only talented as hell but versatile. not nearly their best tho. I guess if you prefer making a solid album that blends in vs a daring album that creates and propels an entirely new sound, maybe.
