I respect them so much for making this. They took quite a few risks and it pans out to one fascinating & distinctive blackgaze/post-metal album.

First three tracks are amazing, but I feel like this may be their weakest release

didn't dig it too hard when it came out but in retrospect it's still really good even if i tend to disagree with the general consensus of what the best songs off it are, that being said glint is one of the best songs in their entire discography arguably on par with the likes of dream house, violet and pecan tree

This album feels like the actual successor to Sunbather. New Bermuda might be my favourite Deafheaven-album, but I don't think it feels quite as connected to their body of work and their sound as a whole as OCHL and Sunbather. This album on the other hand, is sonically the logical next step for a band that just made Sunbather - this feels even more heavily rooted in post-rock, which is as good a move as any. They've already proved they can go real heavy with NB and the surrounding singles (Black Brick and From Kettle to the Coil), so I think, artistically, it made sense for them to go into more mellow direction. That being said, I very much look forward to hearing what they'll do next.

This is my album of the year. Everyone always spams "AOTY" on a new release but it's nearing the end of the year and the only thing that might top it is Yandhi (unless I find some other new release I love). Everything about this album is perfect. You Without End's spoken word pieces and build up/introduction. Honeycomb's heavy Sunbather-like composition. Canary Yellow's melodic, light blend mixing dark with light. Near's soft shoegazey interlude. Glint's vocals in the second half and pummeling guitars. Night People's Chelsea Wolfe feature. Worthless Animal's over-the-top vocals and ominous beginning. This album is a 10/10, It is an improvement on all fronts and shows Deafheaven's evolution and exploration of new sounds and refinement of their craft. Nothing this year has come close to this.

As nearly always with Deafheaven. This band is not capable of creating good looking stuff. Sure, the cover of Sunbather was totally unconventional and a huge kick in the face of the (black) metal scene, but besides that it is just boring. Covers of the Demo, Roads to Judah and New Bermuda look quite good, but they also never selled good looking merchandise like shirts. The few offered shirts look all ridiculous. There is not one shirt I would proudly wear to show my support for this awesome band. And it is again the same with the ugly cover of OCHL.

Sorry, I forgot to mark it as an/my opinion and didn't give any examples for good design (which is not necessary because there are so much). Nevertheless, do you have any arguments or just memes?

You like it or you like it not. I think it's really good. But discussing music...man, let it be...

New Bermuda didn't have that much staying power fo rme, particularly because compositionally it was a bit of a mess. This album flows a lot better to my ears, and I really adored Honeycomb, Glint and Worthless Animal as the kind of blackgaze Deafheaven are known for, but also loved Near and Night People for taking tasteful risks and (imo) paying off. Clarke's duet with Chelsea Wolfe was wonderful.

Doesn't come close to Sunbather, or Deafheaven tbh. I'm willing to argue that there's approximately 30 minutes of Deafheaven material in a 61 minutes long album. I mean, that chorus in Canary Yellow is just embarrassing, cleans bring nothing special to the album and come on man, they announced there'll be a new record like 4 months ago or so, and this is what they come up with. It's kind of disrespectful towards FANS really. Glint is probably the best out of the seven but the rest are either not original enough in terms of their ambience / post-rock impressions or they're just a not twisted enough blend of their older material. First I heard Honeycomb I really liked the song, but also knew that it brings nothing new to the table, and now that the album is out... disappointing man.

this record has nothing to do with punk, it is the same deafheaven, just with more melodic approach and more experiments, punk is anything but melody and experiments

yeah no way your opinion is wrong. the transition tracks are executed so much better than they were on Sunbather ("Near" vs "Windows") and the melodies and calmer sections are so much better than what they sounded like on New Bermuda. The vocals are mixed way better and sound less washed out than on Sunbather too. Memorable melodies that sound less shoegaze-y with how all the guitars blend together, and none of the other metal subgenres New Bermuda was plagued with on songs like "Baby Blue".

Another great album: amazing melodies, sounds are so good... Best band of the 10's (with Car Seat Headrest)
