Probably my least favorite thing they’ve done, unfortunately. I much prefer Paracletus and the Long Defeat for ‘slower’ DsO

I waver on this but sometimes Drought is my favourite DsO record, other times it's Paracletus. But man this is fucking perfection from start to finish

If you can't remember any of Drought, that probably just means you haven't listened to it enough. I listened to it this morning and I've had several of the riffs (particularly from "Fiery Serpents" and "Abrasive Swirling Murk") stuck in my head all day.

Exactly. It's possible to master an album "hot" without making it into a distorted mess - Ash Borer's Cold of Ages is a good recent example of this. It's plenty loud, but the sound is still perfectly clear. Drought, on the other hand, is audibly distorted pretty much throughout. Looking closer at the waveform I think it may come more from overuse of a distortion filter rather than standard 'clipping', but whatever they did to it, it really screwed up the sound. The unfortunate side effect of this is that I will probably never enjoy it as much as it deserves.

that's the cd version, vinyl clipping looks different but it's just as obviously clipped: http://fools-gold.org/aaron/dsovinylclipping.png

you must not have looked very hard. this is the peak from slightly after 3 seconds into Fiery Serpents, and this is only one of several examples I was able to come up with after just a few seconds of looking: http://fools-gold.org/aaron/fieryserpentsclipping.png

As far as the EP, it's great, but whoever mastered it needs a punch in the face for clipping it so badly. Even the vinyl version came out clipped.

All these comparisons to DsO and nobody mentioned the single band I've ever heard that sounds even remotely like them: Gorguts. No other band I've ever heard reaches the same level of dissonant, technical mind-bending complexity. They both sound like the soundtrack to eldritch horrors unearthed from R'lyeh. (Admittedly, so do a few other bands like Portal, Gnaw Their Tongues and Blut aus Nord, but for different reasons).

Well the second was a response to your last point...anyway nobody is getting anywhere in comparing their music to anyone because everyone has different ideas about it.

You're losing track of this convo; I specifically replied to the guy stating "There are plenty of French black metal bands that sound similar to DSO, nothing new", to which you then listed a number of very slightly similar bands, including ones not from France. Then you say "There are no bands that have the sound that they have on Paracletus and Drought because it hasn't been around long enough to be copied or refined a lot, duh." - which made no sense in the context of my original point, i.e. what you just said there....duh.

'Ulcerate are more similar than those suggestions' Not really their music isn't that discordant, it is very dissonant but if you are going to play that card then there are MANY bands that are similar to DsO. Out of a lot of dissonant death metal bands I would say Gigan is actually the closest.

'At most, they sounded like Si Mon at one point' Well yeah that's what I was comparing it to. There are no bands that have the sound that they have on Paracletus and Drought because it hasn't been around long enough to be copied or refined a lot, duh. I also said DsO have their own brand of the style, and I was only saying that they aren't the ONLY band that plays black metal like they do!

Ulcerate are more similar than those suggestions, and they're not even BM. QED.

None of those bands sound anything like DSO. Well, Dodecahedron try, but they sound like a weak imitation. << +1 and I specifically said French, as Sinnergy stated. Dodecahedron are Dutch. Merrimack? Come the fuck on, those 'suggestions' don't even make it to tenuous. Glorior Belli?! At most, they sounded like Si Mon at one point, but they're nothing like modern DSO. You may as well have just said Immortal and Mayhem...
