“SUBSTANCE” is the second single from American singer Demi Lovato's eighth studio album Holy Fvck.
The track was written by Demi Lovato, OAK, Alex Niceforo, Keith Sorrells, Laura Veltz & Jutes.
It was first teased by Lovato on an Instagram post in January of 2022, using lyrics of the song’s pre-chorus. Later, they revealed audio of the bridge on March 22, 2022 in another Instagram story.
On June 29, 2022, Demi posted a video on TikTok showing another snippet of the song and the pre-save link was announced in the same day.
"I wanted to make a point that we live in a world where nothing is real anymore. There’s so much that’s lacking substance, from the content that we intake to the activities we do in our normal lives. We’re always on our phones, we’re always on the internet and I wanted to make a song that was saying how I missed the substance that used to be the world we live in."
