The friends of the classic synthpop Depeche Mode sound will not agree with me at all, but... but for me Songs of Faith and Devotion is Depeche Mode's best album. Maybe just because it is no longer classic 80s synthpop.

If I were introducing Depeche Mode to the casual listener I would recommend VIOLATOR or this gem. Pure seductive mood, ambience and top notch production make this a must listen classic. Think lava lamp, strobe lights, bubble machine and black lights in a candle filled room and you can feel the mood of the album without even listening. Adding both parts together is magical. All songs equal a complete transcending listening experience.

Favourite album alongside Black Celebration and Music for the Masses. Plus the Devotional tour, despite breaking up the band, definitely featured my favourite stage design and some incredible remixes of classic DM tracks done by Alan. He made that tour come to life for me. Shame it ended the way it did, but at least they're all doing better now.

Was a different style when it came out and I did not appreciate it at that time. I started listening again to it a few years ago, and wow! This album has some of my favorite DM songs. Love Condemnation and One Caress. I can clearly hear the passion in those songs, and many others on this album. One of my fav albums.
