I never liked this album that much, but after a breakup melachonoly I did some acid and played it for like 5 hours straight and found out what's it's about. Their darkest piece. Instrumentals are crazy.

The quintessence of DM creativity. Mix of electronic and live instruments is very organic in this album.

Maybe the last DM album on which you had the feeling that they are innovative and set new musical points themselves. Exciter then focused on club sounds and ran after more trends instead of setting some themselves. After PTA at the latest, Depeche Mode were somehow out of steam on a musical level. This only shows what a great album Ultra is in itself.

DM invented trip-hop. What an album! Listen to Sister of Night and then to Dissolved Girl, they have some similarities, especially this chaos and hard part in the middle in both songs.

No, they're not... Massive Attack did it way earlier in 1991, then Portishead in 1994 & Tricky in 1995, so give them THEIR flowers

No trouble at all, pal. Well, you know, when people say here someone INVENTED something, it's usually a joke. I just wanted to say that I see a lot of similarities in Ultra's and Mezzanine's sound.

A rather large influence on this album is Gavin Friday's Shag Tobacco. Dave and Martin liked it so much they got the same producer.

Not a great fan of this DM rock-style, but the good ones in this album are REALLY good!

Quite possibly the last Depeche Mode album that was a banger from start to finish. The production on this album enamours me, the atmosphere it creates is sensual with just that little bit of edge and grunge. Not to mention that Dave Gahan's vocals are the best they've ever sounded. Gahan's vocals range from soft and "velvet-y" to harsh and raspy, adding a sense of passion that acompanies each lyric. I often hear fellow fans criticise that Depeche Mode is "not the same" without Alan Wilder. On the contrary, I believe Ultra is solid proof that Depeche Mode can survive without Wilder, they just need to adjust to the idea of working with a producer that are familiar with Depeche Mode & how Depeche Mode evolve in terms of tone. My only criticism with this album would be the instrumental tracks as they make it ever so slightly tedious to do a full play-through. However, the album is solid, regardless. It's up there with Songs of Faith and Devotion and Violator as Depeche Mode's holy trinity.

It's a hard album to listen to, especially for beginner. Altough, it has good vibes.

can't agree with you. When I was 12 or 13, I saw the "Useless" video on MTV for the first time and I haven't listened to any of their songs before, so I was a beginner. But I did dig this one from the very first listening I think. Later I bought "Ultra" on a tape. Spectacular work. The greatest, in my opinion.

I agree. Only song I heard from DM when I was young was Enjoy the Silence which is very catchy song. However when I was trying to get into DM more I liked their 80's stuff but post Violator albums were boring for me. Now it's different. I can't say why it was this way before because I like this albums a lot now!

As tedious as this was to listen to in full, there are highlights that I enjoy listening to from time to time, and oddly it's the singles...usually metal/hard rock bands have the worst tracks as singles. Glad to see Depeche Mode is the exception to that.

Действительно, шикарная работа, лучший альбом, от начала и до конца. Не знаю, как это им так удалось после ухода Алана, после уже не так цепляюще все....
