if looks could kill is Destroy Lonely’s follow-up project to his August 2022 mixtape, NO STYLIST.

Destroy Lonely first teased the project on September 15, 2022, in a now-deleted Twitter post, stating:

"next album > “if looks could kill…”

After the release of the music videos for “FAKENGGAS” and “NEVEREVER”, fans were already ready for new music from Lone, which prompted him to reveal the supposed release date for the album by stating on Tumblr, “my album comes out in april”.

This would be followed with the release of the highly-anticipated, self titled song “if looks could kill” on March 3rd, 2023. However, following the release of this single, Destroy Lonely would keep radio silence about new music for the next month or so.

On April 15th, 2023, after his performance in Rolling Loud Thailand, Destroy Lonely would give fans a hint of when to expect the album by saying “If Looks Could Kill closer than y'all think”, seemingly aiming for a late April release. Lone would confirm that one of the songs he previously previewed, “how u feel?” (at the time titled “Finish Line”) is confirmed to be on the album.

The rollout for the album would seem to officially start on April 25th, 2023, when fans noticed a “billboard” in New York City with just the words “If Looks Could Kill” written in red on a mirror. The board would also show a QR code on the bottom right, leading fans to his website, revealing a countdown ending for May 5th, the supposed release for the album. Lone would also break his silence from social media, posting on his Instagram story a snippet of “by the pound”.

On the night of April 25th, Opium labelmate and close friend of Lone, Ken Carson would post pictures with Lone on his Instagram. This was also followed by an Instagram post by Lone himself a few minutes after Ken’s post as well as Destroy Lonely archiving any other posts he had on his page. In the comments of Lone’s post, Ken Carson and Lone would both promote this album, with Lone teasing the song “money & sex”, one of his collaborations with Ken, by commenting “$ & XXX”.

The official tracklist, as well as cover art, would be revealed through the pre-saves revealed by Destroy Lonely through his Instagram on April 28th, 2023. The pre-save also revealed different bonus tracks and album arts for the physical copies of the album. “check the fleet” and “back sippin” for the Vinyl Version and “too damn rich” and “spillin” on the CD Version.
