If you've ever heard the Gillespie of around 1952-53, I'd vote for him as best trumpet player ever. Pops (Louis Armstrong) was never quite as good, even at his best. Nobody, not Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, anybody, ever had that tone. Miles Davis was more of a stylist. And Pops had contempt for bebop jazz; like Cab Calloway, he derisively called it "Chinese music." It was after his time; he never understood it and couldn't play it.

correcting myself........pops never recorded groovin high...this is definitely gillespie playing his wonderful composition...they could both both climb the scales....but i think pops out-traveled gillespie by an octave or two...
