"A Change of Seasons" is a song written by former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.
Originally intended to be included on 1992's "Images and Words" (which the band initially wanted to release as a double album), it was eventually re-recorded and released in 1995 as the title track of an EP.
This piece is split into seven different parts, amounting to a length of 23 minutes and 9 seconds:
- I. The Crimson Sunrise (instrumental)
- II. Innocence
- III. Carpe Diem
- IV. The Darkest of Winters (instrumental)
- V. Another World
- VI. The Inevitable Summer (instrumental)
- VII. The Crimson Sunset
On November 16th, 1984 ; Mike Portnoy learned about the concept of "carpe diem" (which translates to "seize the day") in class . It basically means that we should always make the most of the present time, because once it's gone you won't have it back. His teacher also urged their students to give their relatives "a hug and a kiss, and tell them that you love them", advice that Mike followed when he got home that day.
In a tragic and ironic twist of fate, the very same day, Mike's mother got onto a flight which sadly ended in a plane crash due to the pilot suffering a heart attack.
