"What I Am" is a song written by Edie Brickell and Kenny Withrow and recorded by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians for their debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars (1988). It was produced by Pat Moran. The single had 2 tracks on the B-side - "I Do" and "Walk on the Wild Side‎"‎

According to the What I Am Songfacts, the song got a huge bump when the band performed it on Saturday Night Live. Actor Matthew Modine and the abrasive, chain-smoking talk show host Morton Downey Jr. also appeared on the show, making it the highest-rated episode of 1988. The song was also featured in a 1989 episode of Miami Vice.

It peaked at number thirty-one in the United Kingdom, while reaching number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. This version was ranked number seventy-seven on VH1's list of The 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders.
