This is a song that was influenced by The Beach Boys, and contains contributions from members of the group; Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston both sang backup. Elton said the Beach Boys "Sound, harmonies, and the way they structured their songs" was an influence on many of his tracks, including this one and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1165

As rock ballads go this is top of the range, the melody is a killer and the orchestration is out of this world,Elton has written many a fine song but for me none finer than this, monumental

Toni Tennille and Daryl Dragon, who would later have several hits and their own TV show as The Captain & Tennille, performed on this. The idea was to have a huge chorus made up of semi-famous singers in the background. Dusty Springfield, as well as members of America and Three Dog Night recorded vocals for the song, but all the voices sounded terrible when mixed together so they just used Wilson, Johnston, and Tennille. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1165 (Ed. Note: Yes that is the Tower of Power Horns on the last verse...)

Beach Boys Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston, Toni Tenille, and Beach Boys sideman Billy Hinsche sang BG vocals on this song...ex-Beach Boys sideman Daryl Dragon, better known as "The Captain", did the vocal arrangement.
