very good album, but as for me a little bit too schizophrenic. couln't he record separately country/folk albums, jazz albums, and rock albums?

I'm honestly a bit surprised this doesn't have more people listening to it. I liked Secret, Profane & Sugarcane in theory, but in practice this one pulls off the style a hell of a lot better - although I will admit that it's maybe a bit long for me. I think it's a bit more dynamic and certainly more diverse stylistically than Secret, Profane and that helps it quite a bit.

I always thought All This Useless Beauty was his finest album. Not sure that one rocks. I thought North kinda sucked and I'm from Canada ! At this point I can only say I'll be playing this more than the ballet album and not just for the cover which is rather cool

Before we argue on quality, let's just all admit that that's one of the coolest album covers on any record in at least a few years. I can't think of ANY that look better in the past three years at least.

The interesting musical combinations and ideas on this record are way cooler than hearing Elvis try to rock.

Just previewed all the tracks and all I can think of is that I miss the Elvis Costello who rocks. I know Elvis aspires to be Cole Porter, but as someone who has all the CDs and has seen Elvis live 25+ times, Elvis is truly at his best when he rocks. Sometimes I think it's a shame that he doesn't realize it himself. I'm all for the little excursions into other genres, but this sounds like Elvis has decided to stick around in the slow and mid-tempo world and that's simply not where he belongs. I feel like we've heard this music before. I don't feel like running to buy this CD and I always race out for new Elvis. Bummer...

Seems awfully harsh, the LP's only been out less than a week. On first listen, I quite like a few tracks, and I'm willing to give the others time to grow. And really, lyrical wankery? Would you prefer he just sing "I want your bad romance" or some bullshit like that? The conceit of writing lyrics based on historical characters and/or situations may be a bit pretentious, but it is EC after all. How are these lyrics any less wankish than "Oliver's Army" or "American Without Tears"? I guess it's just difficult for me to dismiss an artist's work so blithely, especially one I admire (which you obviously do too, since you've got over 700 plays). Or is this just one of those hipster "nobody's as good as they used to be" rants?
