Thats one of the many common misconceptions about Elvis. Elvis made covers, and the companies he recorded for always made sure to place the writer of the song in brackets on the record. Besides that Elvis often mentioned during live shows: “its not my song, but I'd like to sing it for you anyways”. Or: ”this guy had a record out recently, I'd like to do it for you”. Elvis blended gospel and rhythm and blues by covering old blues songs (often first sung by black artists) and turned it into a new sound that especially younger people loved. Elvis had big respect for those musicians and simply liked to cover their songs.

"Number forty-seven said to number three, You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see, I sure would be delighted with your company, Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me." I don't know man... A man calling another man "cute" and then asking him to dance seems pretty gay to me.
