Escape Goat's first EP, self-titled but casually referenced as the "free EP", began as a salvage and archiving operation. The band was expecting to lose their founding guitar player if he couldn't secure permanent resident status in Canada, so they scrambled to self-record a basement demo of their songs as a keepsake of their time together. A few months later, when they learned that Neil would, indeed, be able to stay in Canada as a permanent resident, they returned to those demo recordings and recruited a professional studio guru, Patty Peeze to re-record the guitar, re-edit/remix all the tracks, and master the recordings for public release. That release finally came on July 21, 2017.
