"Nikes" is a critique of the trappings of materialistic hedonism, with frequent reference to Nike shoes, shiny gold/glitter, and fantasies of pleasure. The track features two competing voices, adding a sense of tension and conflict to the otherwise dreamy music. The lyrics include cultural references to the late A$AP Yams (who is featured in the video along with A$AP Rocky), Pimp C, and Trayvon Martin.

The song is the lead single from Frank Ocean’s third album "Blonde", originally titled "Boys Don’t Cry". It was released the day after his visual album "Endless" on Apple Music. The video is highly stylized and features race cars, nudity, immolation, partying and a devil. The video contains scenes of a party, which is later revealed to be staged for a film crew. Frank Ocean appears on a stage in the video, and begins singing when the voices switch.

The song was first teased by Chance the Rapper, who was rumored to collaborate on the album.
