oh hey it's the best band in music right now that's neat (you haven't heard fauna til you've heard it live)

I have to say, for me "fauna" might be the second best thing from them since "the mountain". I've only today started listening to that album and I am already blown away and totally addicted. it's like they removed the worst and merged the best parts from their previous material since "affinity" to create a masterfully crafted prism.

Fauna was one of the best albums to come out last year, and is also one of my favourites. If you feel it's their second best album that's totally a respectable opinion, but to completely discount their other recent albums is what I don't agree with. To me, Virus is also one of their best albums so far, and I'd like for people to be open minded and recognise its worth for what it truly is, as more of a modern technical metal album than a traditional sounding prog album.

Delayed response but check out Night Verses and Turbulence's newest albums if you think that.

No, not just you. In the case of Haken, I think they started out their career with great albums and since Affinity they have been slowly decreasing in quality. They began focussing more on technical complexity, overshadowing the strong songwriting of their first few albums. Their recent outputs are much less memorable, with barely anything that stands out as compared to the earlier works.. They have become more and more generic. And I think this trend is not uncommon with prog metal bands of today. Caligula's Horse is also a good example. To me if you compare Haken's recent music with Caligula's Horse... they sound very very similar. I like Caligula's Horse, but they are also very generic and bland. Like prog metal without salt. The same applies for Soen. But hey.. tastes are tastes, just my opinion.

Progressive/ technical death metal is an incredibly vast genre with a plethora of bands creating a lot of great and novel stuff within it. But the thing is that it won't be appealing much to an ordinary prog metal fan, which could be because of the vocals or the imagery or just the over the top instrumentation. Sort of the reason why I feel it doesn't help to recommend those bands to old school prog metallers. It's more of a subgenre with one of the most exclusive fanbases. And btw Threshold are much more than just decent, they're still producing top tier albums after all these years.

Puta que pariu o show em SP foi absurdo, que privilégio ter ficado pertinho do palco, como que esses caras tocam tão bem ao vivo, quase não tem diferença pro que a gente ouve nos álbuns

Talking about their relatively recent albums I feel Vector was a bit rushed as it sometimes lacks the high standard of consistent quality all through its playtime that their other records have. Veil saves it from being a total letdown after Affinity, although there are some other very good songs on it. Virus on the other hand is one of their best and most modern sounding albums. It's got the most abundant quality within their output so far of making any metalhead pump adrenaline like they do it for a living, it's quite simply that headbangable and therefore represents the pure metal tendencies and capabilities of the band in the most demonstrative of ways. Fauna is just as awesome and quite certainly one of their most unique, artistic and over the top proggy albums yet to me. It does not feel like an accessible or obvious offering at first but it leaves a beautiful impression very early and deservedly demands repeated and attentive listening.

Wow, Fauna is really good. Vector is the only album of theirs I haven't gelled with, everything else has been among my favourite releases from their respective years. Haken just keep on making bangers.

The new album continues the trend of repeating themes from previous albums, its just hard to remember most of them, would have to listen to their older albums again to quantify everything

Listening to Vector again I think they should be the favorite band of many mathematicians. This is just insane.

Yeah Nil By Mouth is a disgusting riff fest. It's great. But I don't think anything competes with the intro to Prosthetic.

Not one of the best songs on the album and yes very thrashy generically, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but still quite entertaining to listen to. I mostly listen to just the initial part of it, the rest of the album is much better to me.

Okay this one is definitely a grower. They've kinda changed their style, made it more poppy so to speak.

I was afraid of this after first hearing new songs live recently. EDIT: Listening to the album now I actually don't think it's the case :D.

You know, you can just stop, look back, and appreciate how far these guys have come already. Every time I go memory lane on Haken I am flabbergasted on how brilliant they sound. And while looking forward to their next thing, oh my, are they good for what they've achieved already!

Virus has been my least favorite album, but Nightingale is promising a better next album!

Nightingale to me feels like almost a revisit to the Visions era (especially with that intro), and I like that very much because it really adds to the album's cohesiveness. It really feels like they used their best works from every album and condensed them in an innovative way into Fauna!

I can't say Nightingale is bad, but I hope it's not the best of the album. I desperately need a good Haken album after Virus...

Nightingale is so fucking good. Probably what Haken miss in their 2 previous album. Now I kinda agree they write their best stuff when they are more into Prog, rather than metal.

I have never seen a more wrong ranking. The correct ranking is: Visions>Aquarius>The Mountain>Restoration>Affinity>Virus>Vector.

I remember the first time I listened to this band and thought it was a try-hard Dream Theater clone. How dumb I was. I mean, DT is still better, but Haken is great too, specially Virus and The Mountain.

Messiah Complex is pretty great. Don't know why they spliced it into pieces like that. Just to make it look like the album has more songs than it actually has?

Lol it has been some time since I posted this :D I'm pretty sure it's about streaming numbers these days. Four five-minute songs is better than one 20-minute song financially

Imo, Virus is a mix of Haken, Caligulas Horse, Opeth, and Devin Townsend and a bit of Shinning (NOR) and thrash. Agree?

"Haken's first album are far more innovative and fun than the last ones." - agree, tho Affinity had a similar impression, at least on me.
